In a nutshell our story started with a simple question from Uncle Tom, “Can you figure out how we can generate money in the winter season with our greenhouse?” Through one of our fertilizer suppliers we met Jason Lewis, a farmer in North Carolina, who taught us a unique way to think about running a CSA program. With this inspiration, Kris and Steve went to work developing some ideas and decided on a plan. With Uncle Tom’s blessing Sorbello Farms CSA was born!
Our main goal in the CSA is to disrupt the current produce distribution system and provide locally grown produce to members in our region as quickly as possible. To accomplish this we first committed to growing year round. That meant outside during the typical New Jersey growing season and indoors throughout the fall/winter/spring months. Next, through our long standing relationships with local farmers in the area we are able to source just harvested produce which we do not grow ourselves. Finally, we thought the best scenario for our busy members was to offer farm to doorstep delivery rather than making our members drive to our farm or a pickup location just to get their box.
We were fully confident that we were on the right path but knew we needed to develop the team to make this concept truly special. That’s when we invited Michael Brooks, owner of Dusty Lane Farms, to join the team. Never thinking he would be interested, Michael said “Yes!” Little we did the three of us know our current lawyer, Jeffrey Medio, was interested in more than just being our lawyer. He expressed interest in somehow having a bigger role so our team of three grew to a team of four and that’s how the Sorbello Farms CSA executive team was formed.
Kris Wilson, CEO (Chief Executive Officer)
From a teacher and high school coach to a full time farmer. That about sums it up! Kris graduated West Chester University in 1994 with a Health and Physical Education degree but in 2006 his entrepreneurial spirit brought him back to the family farm to help bring advanced technology and develop a food safety program for their current wholesale business. Kris brings a creative attitude, an aggressive mindset, coupled with an out-of-the box thinking mentality to our team.
Michael Brooks, CFO (Chief Financial Officer)
Michael was born and raised to farm. It’s been instilled in his blood since a child by his parents who started Dusty Lane Farms. A strong work ethic, high integrity mentality, an aggressive mindset, coupled with a strong foundation in finances makes Michael one of the leading farmers in the state of New Jersey. His value to the team is priceless and is the “balance” we need as a team to grow to our future potential.
Steve Vazquez, COO (Chief Operating Officer)
Twenty six years in Nuclear industry and now a full time farmer. What?!!? Steve left a high pay/high stressed environment to start a new career in an industry that was totally foreign to him. Now that takes guts however his 20 plus year friendship with Kris made the decision a “no brainer.” At least that’s what Kris says. LOL Steve brings a ton of “common sense” operational knowledge, an ongoing positive attitude, and another creative mindset to our team.
Jeffrey Medio, CLC (Chief Legal Counsel)
Can you imagine a lawyer as partner in our farming operations? Does that even make sense? Totally in our minds! Instantly we knew Jeff’s ability as a lawyer was off the charts but when we discovered his unique approach to business, and his creative mindset, we knew he was no “typical” lawyer. Jeff grew up in a farming community and worked on his Uncle’s farm while growing up so he understands our business and knows what is needed to succeed. Jeff brings a ton of legal and business development experience to our team.
